HISTORY

New York native Thomas G. Rowe founded the town of Onalaska, WI in 1851. A poem by Thomas Campbell was the origin of the name Onalaska, which means “The Pleasure of Hope.” Onalaska quickly became a flourishing lumber town and also attracted early settlers with its fertile farmland and remarkable fishing and hunting.
